MIX AND MATCH YOUR UPHOLSTERY!

Thinking about re-upholstering your furniture?  Don’t know what fabric to use?  Well, why not just combine the ones you like and use ‘em all?

IMG_2080

Notice the stripe back, the medallion print front and the furry cheetah pillows?

IMG_2183

Here they have a blue-dyed croc print with a combination of bleu’s….

IMG_2076

And, here they have a stripe, a cheetah, a print and a solid.

IMG_2090

Look at this fun sofa with the brown tones and this punch of electric blue.  How fun is that?  And, it’s paired with another cool pattern in this great leather ottoman.

IMG_2091

By the way take a look at this cool back on this sofa.  Don’t you love this?

IMG_2104

This sofa isn’t necessarily mix and match fabrics, but look how it’s paired with this fun orange fabric.  Creative and fun.

IMG_2108

Totally cool…..

IMG_2081

So look at these pictures closely to understand how much fun you can have mixing and matching your fabrics on one piece of furniture.  Then you can carry one of two of those fabrics to other pieces in the room.

It takes a simple piece and makes it a little more savvy….gives it a little more style.

A Little Swank, A Little Swagger….

Okay, so I know I haven’t posted in the last couple weeks……again…….and I have to apologize…..again!

With all the great things I found at the High Point Furniture Market I had every intention of posting new blog posts the second I returned, but after having been gone a week I came back to an over-packed work schedule and playing “catch up” with client needs.

So I thought I’d do a blog post on some sexy, cool furniture I came across at one of the many showrooms I was fortunate enough to visit.

IMG_2154

And, who doesn’t want sexy in the bedroom????

IMG_2153

Love the lines on this chair, the lamp, the mirror….. and all the silver and black…..

IMG_2155

And, what a cool headboard…..

IMG_2156

Can’t you see the swank…..

IMG_2157

And, the swagger????? Smile

IMG_2158

Great mirrors above and below….

IMG_2160

IMG_2159

And, how fun is this headboard?  Oh, so Hollywood…….

Love, love, love!

Color In The Kitchen: Orange?????

To continue with my color in the kitchen series I thought I’d be bold and introduce you to the color……orange.  I know, I know most of us wouldn’t dare….

imagesCA8630ZY

But, for those of you who love color and want to have fun with it think about the color of orange for your kitchen.  Granted it’s a color more often used for a modern space….

imagesCABP7N5N

But, it works in a traditional kitchen, too.

imagesCACDWF1Z

imagesCAF4H9KS

It’s kind of a crazy color to think of for the kitchen, but for the right person…in the right house…you never know….

Modern%20Kitchen%20-%20After

It could totally work.  Here they combined it with red for an interesting, unusual color scheme.  And, check out the fun back splash.

Style With Tile!

First of all – apologies for the lack of blog posts lately!!  I’ve been off the charts busy with various client projects and there’s barely been time left to breathe.  So unfortunately blogging has had to take a back seat.  So for those of you who subscribe to or frequent my blog I’m SO SORRY!!  But, I’m trying!  As they say, “I’m dancin’ as fast as I can.” Smile

Okay…onto the business of design….

I’ve done several blog posts on having fun with tile, but after seeing some of these interesting displays I wanted to show you some great new looks and styles out there that might inspire you for your next tile project.

2013-01-25 14.17.23

Take a look at this fun shower.  Notice all these interesting textures and the mix of size, shape and style.  Tumbled stone on the shower surround with a band of a rough hewn stacked stone.  Here they’ve placed a pencil rail mold  above and below the band for a finished look.  And, how cool is this look with the wood-look tiles at the bottom of the shower?

2013-01-25 14.17.37

Here are long tiles in varying widths.  A great look for walls or floors.

2013-01-31 08.59.39

This pebble look is a fun look for a shower bringing in a touch of the rustic outdoors.

2013-01-31 09.00.22

And, look at this fun rustic, wood-look tile in this fun pattern.  See how versatile and fun you can get with tile these days.

2013-02-11 09.11.57

A great contemporary display with this linear look tile mixed with the square tile placed at an angle.

2013-02-11 09.12.14

With all the textures, colors and styles the patterns you can create are limitless…..

So as I’ve said many, many times before think outside the box and have some fun.  Don’t do “ordinary” do “extraordinary”….

And, get stylin’ with your tilin’!!!

SUPER COOL DINING ROOMS!!

My last blog post was on “fun and fabulous place settings” that create an “experience” rather than just a meal.  Well, that holds true with the dining room itself, too. When it comes to feasting there’s nothing more inviting than a cozy, charming ambiance in the dining area.  I think we all agree that dining is much more pleasant, much more enjoyable…..and becomes more of an experience in a “super cool” space!

2012-12-29-09.31.06_thumb1

A cool dining space creates the proper “mood” or vibe and sets the pace for the evening.  It should make our guests feel warm and welcome, ready for a nice, long evening of good food, good conversation and good fun. This casual space has a warm ambiance with its cobblestone floors, stone wall, chunky wood table, etc.  Doesn’t the thought of a nice dinner here seem appealing?

Dining-Room-Furniture-Style-550x732_

Or for the more formal – how about this?  Sort of a grandiose, opulent entrance and overall ambiance.  But, warm, intriguing and inviting just the same.  (I’d like a dining room like this and a kitchen like the one above!)

diningweb1_thumb

You can see this amazing space sets a different tone….

modern-dining-room_thumb

As does this…..

This….

japanese-dining-room-furniture_thumb

Or even this.  Unusual, but fun!  Maybe not so comfy for us “older folks”!  I’m afraid my knees might get stuck permanently and I might never get back up!  But, it’s a cool look for the young and flexible just the same.

2012-12-29-09.31.50_thumb1

And, for another kitchen/dining space how fun is this?  What a happy place to sit with a glass of wine, friends, family and great food.

Now that’s an experience!

Fun and Fabulous Place Settings: Create An “Experience”….Not Just A Meal!

It’s always fun to come up with a really creative table to help set the stage for a nice dinner party.  Ambiance is everything (well, and good food doesn’t hurt either!) – and aside from lighting and the overall look and feel of the space itself – the place setting is a huge factor in setting the tone for the evening.  Here are some fun ways to bring interest and personality to yours.

IMG_1219[1]

Notice the layering effect here on this place setting?  And, the fun silverware?  Creates interest right away and welcomes the guest to come, join, sit….Just a way of making them feel a little special……and a way to make dining more of an “experience” than just a meal.

IMG_1220[1]

This place setting combines color, pattern and texture.  I love this stripe with the pattern and again with the solid.  And, why not add a covered bowl to the top of the place setting for a bit of intrigue and surprise…..

IMG_1221[1]

It’s a little unexpected and fun.

IMG_1222[1]

Look closely here and you’ll see several elements that make this table fun.  The layering of colors and textures…..

IMG_1223[1]

The whimsical mixing of patterns.  Notice the stemmed water glass, the striped mug and the patterned bowls here.  Nothing boring and stuffy about this!  And, hang a gander at the incredible charger…..love it.  Talk about texture and interest!

IMG_1238[1]

Switching gears to the traditional – here you see they’ve also layered different plates and patterns, added a colorful placemat, a vibrant napkin with a fresh and festive napkin ring.   Simple, but refreshing and inviting.

IMG_1239[1]

The same holds true in the green….

IMG_1243[1]

And again in this yellow.  Great for an Easter spread..right?

IMG_1240[1]

You can see this tan and red look wonderful together on this tan cloth with this fun patterned napkin…..

IMG_1242[1]

And takes on a whole new personality when using a white placemat and napkin.  See all the different personalities with these three place settings sitting side by side?

Lots of fun!  Create your own unique personality for your table.  Just remember…..bring in layers of color, patterns and textures and you’ll have yourself a warm inviting display for your next dinner party.

Woven Woods For Your Windows – On A Budget!!!

I’ve been thinking about adding woven woods to my family room for a couple of years.  Not just because I like the look (which I definitely do), but because we need just a little filtering from the sun for about 15 – 20 minutes in the mornings when the sun blares through. (Of course it’s just at eye level when we sit and read the paper.)

HOME DEPOT Bamboo Shades e744574d-447e-4e18-918e-97045acb8b05_300

But, I didn’t really want to go the route of custom treatments if I could help it, because the windows were already completely dressed out in a custom drapery treatment.  So spending more money on custom treatments we really only needed for 20 minutes a day just didn’t feel quite right to me.  (And, I have plenty of other things I can spend my money on. Smile)  Besides, as you can see above there are some retail shades that look pretty good.

Cocoa Havan Bamboo Shades 92d9fdb9-1398-421c-9842-1f364a308fe4_300

So I started keeping my eye out for some inexpensive retail shades I could use.  The problem with retail verses custom – aside from a quality issue in many cases – is the sizes.  It’s not an easy task to find retail shades to fit the inside of your window which is what I needed.  So whenever I was out running around I would check the sizes and styles of stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, Lowes or Home Depot.  They actually all had some nice looking products, but nothing in my window size that I could find.  Until recently that is when I found these at Home Depot!  Just the right size, just the right color, and at $50.00 per shade….just the right price, too. Smile

IMG_4112

So I quickly snatched them up and on Saturday my hubby humored me and spent the morning hanging them for me.

IMG_4113

I’m not gonna lie……he’d have rather been doing just about anything else in the whole world. Winking smile

IMG_4114

But, he was a good little hubby and took the time to untangle all the strings and unhook strings that had gotten tangled up in the gliders.  (Yes, one glitch to retail – there are a few challenges to overcome!)

IMG_8340

But, in the end…..he got ‘em hung and they look great!

IMG_8341

They lower and raise like they should…..

IMG_8342

Add a nice little touch to the space….

IMG_8343

And, filter the sun just enough.

IMG_8347

And, the best part is….they were only $50.00 apiece!

IMG_8349

I love the way they add a cozy, casual touch to my somewhat formal family room.

IMG_8350

Just what the space needed!

COLOR IN THE KITCHEN SERIES: SINGING THE BLUES…BLUE KITCHENS THAT IS!

Over the next couple months I’m going to be posting a series called “Color In The Kitchen” to highlight various colors that can snazz up your space and create a kitchen unique to your own personal style.

This week I’m focusing on blue.  Primarily royal navy and navy blue.

2012-12-29 09.33.17

Navy blue is and has been one of my favorite decorating colors for the last thirty years.  (My bedroom has been navy blue for twenty years.  You can see it at the bottom of this previous blog post here.)

I admit I don’t actually have a blue kitchen myself, but wow just look at these.  Inspiring to say the least!

Navy-Kitchen-600x400

It’s one of those basic, timeless colors that seems to stand the test of time no matter what colors of the year come and go.  Navy always looks great when paired with white.  Again, timeless and stately.

Royal navy and white….

modern-kitchens-kitchen-design-dark-blue-cabinets

How exquisite……..not to mention fun and charming!

navy-kitchen

2012-12-29 09.33.22

And, as you can see it is striking in a contemporary space as well.

2012-12-29 09.33.46

This midnight blue……so rich and warm…

blue-kitchen-cabinets

This happy royal blue…..so fun and cheerful…..

And, this distressed blue…..so, so charming.

So don’t think you have to stick with the typical wood grain stains, black or white (which are all beautiful, of course).  Remember there are other colors out there so think a little outside the norm and bring in something fun like a deep, rich blue.

Decorating with Beige: It Doesn’t Have To Be Boring:

For many people when they think of beige they think boring!”.  But, beige doesn’t have to be boring at all.  In fact it creates a very soothing, warm ambiance when done correctly.

2012-12-29 09.21.03

The key to a monochromatic color scheme is using different textures and introducing other interesting items to create interest and keep the eye moving.  Take a look at this space above.  Notice everything is a version of beige, but you’d never say it was boring.  The woven woods, the addition of wood, rattan and other textures in the space hold your interest and please the eye – creating warmth and welcoming you in.

2012-12-29 09.35.55

Here you see, again, the combination of textures and varying shades of beige.  The addition of the sleek espresso table adds a new texture and breaks up the beige upholstery tones just enough.

2012-12-29 09.09.10

Look closely here….beige, beige and more beige.  But, lots of texture to break it up and maintain interest and charm.

2012-12-29 09.08.39

You’ll notice the same thing here….

2012-12-29 09.10.22

And, here……

2009-02-28 14.55.18

But, if you really wanted to you could bring in that fun pop of color.

You see……beige is not boring at all!

COOL AND COZY INTERIOR STONE WALLS!

Ever thought about putting stone walls inside your house?  And, I mean other than your fireplace.  It creates a really fun, cool, cozy atmosphere you really don’t see a lot.

imagesCA6RU5WI

A stone wall like this completely changes this space from the vibe you’d get from a regular textured and painted wall.  Isn’t it interesting and fun?

interior_stone6

Here they’ve combined brick with the stone for this pass thru wall.  Gives it such dimension and personality.

imagesCAOQG27E

I put a stone wall very similar to this one in a model home master bedroom years ago when I worked at a design center.   (Not this one, but very similar) ….I just can’t for the life of me find the pictures.   Grrrrrr!!!!

interior_stone_wall_decorating_ideas_from_eldorado_stone_4

Wouldn’t this be a fun wall to have in your home somewhere?

I’d feel like I was eating at an upscale restaurant with a dining room wall like this….
