The Modern Day Log Cabin

On a recent trip to Angelfire, New Mexico (have I mentioned I want to have a house there!) with my hubby and friends we were fortunate to be there during a tour of homes in the mountains.  You know how you drive by certain houses and “oooh” and “aaaah” and wonder what they look like on the inside?…….. Well, we got to see them firsthand.  And, don’t  you know that was right up my alley?!   So fun!  One of the houses we saw was an amazing log cabin.

IMG_6189

But, probably not so much the cabin that first comes to mind.

IMG_6155

This is a high end, state of the art modern day log cabin with incredible detail down to the last nook and cranny.

IMG_6186

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words and this is one case where that holds true.  Peruse the pictures below for the tour of this amazing log cabin:

IMG_6156

Massive chunks of wood everywhere.  On the ceiling……

IMG_6157

Around the fireplace…..

IMG_6169

So much detail.

IMG_6158

Look at the walls in this nook….

IMG_6159

(Little side note:  I love the place setting here – mixing all the different color stoneware.)

IMG_6160

IMG_6161

Sturdy, solid, strong….

IMG_6162

Notice the window frame and the rough edge on the granite countertop?

IMG_6164

IMG_6165

Fabulous circular deck…

IMG_6166

Balconies everywhere….

IMG_6168

IMG_6170

IMG_6173

Every room – thick, solid wood, a feeling that this house is as solid and well built as it gets.

IMG_6174

IMG_6175

Even the stairs were cut logs……awesome!

IMG_6176

IMG_6177

IMG_6178

The furnishings are heavy duty, sturdy logs. too.  Solid, sturdy….and beautiful.   (That’s my friend Barbie posing in the background. Smile)

Perfectly Purple Halloween Décor!

With fall officially here and October around the corner it’s time to think about those fall decorations…..which always starts with good ole’ Halloween fun.  But, just because the traditional colors for Halloween are orange and black doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with other colors……like…..purple?

IMG_6615

Yep, purple…..

IMG_6616

See how fun it can be?

IMG_6617

Quirky, peppy and oddly refreshing…….don’t you think?

Wood-Gas-Infrared Brick Ovens: Options For Indoors Or Outdoors

If you’re looking to beef up your outdoor kitchen or living area (or even your indoor kitchen) Renato Ovens offers Americans the “age-old tradition”, flavor and taste that wood-fire cooking offers.  It brings this ancient tradition up to date with it’s woodburning brick ovens, rotisseries and charbroilers merging the flavors of old with the innovative, techno savvy ingenuity of today.

image006

After years of his childhood spent as the errand runner and brick layer at a brick factory, founder Renato Riccio, left home at the age of 20 and immigrated to the United States with $3 in his pocket. He spent several years in the food industry here when he “caught a scent” and  began to long for his homeland cuisine.

image001

He had no idea that his years of brick laying along with his years in the food industry would one day work together many years later to combine an Old World tradition and flavor from his hometown in Tuscany, Italy with new age technology for a “new way of cooking” here in the US.

image005

His is a product that can adapt to a large restaurant or a simple family kitchen – indoors …..

This flame-broiling method emphasizes healthy, nutritious foods, enhancing natural flavors without having to add artificial additives or seasonings.

An Extraordinary Ordinary Life

Given the recent unrest in this world which gets more chaotic everyday…..along with my birthday earlier this month and other events in my life – it’s made me a bit reflective, nostalgic and introspective.  It leads me to sort of think about my place in this crazy, volatile world – and the incredible blessings God has bestowed upon me in my simple, quiet little life – one I very much take for granted.   I know I’m right where God would have me be at this stage of my life….and, sometimes, in the midst of all the “busy-ness” (though not often enough) I stop a minute and realize just how precious my ordinary life is.

My Ordinary Life

I’m an ordinary girl

With an ordinary life…

I’m an ordinary mom

And an ordinary wife

IMG_6506

I live on an ordinary street

In an ordinary house

I have ordinary children

And an ordinary spouse

IMG_6503

I’m extraordinarily grateful

For this ordinary life

Which brings extraordinary joy

To this mother and this wife

I see extraordinary things

In this ordinary-“ness”

For I know in my heart

I’m extraordinarily blessed…

IMG_6509

For my ordinary children

Are extraordinary to me –

My ordinary spouse

The best a man could be -

IMG_6510

A roof over my head…

An extraordinary thing

Food on the table

An extra blessing –

IMG_2416[1]

Let me never lose sight

Of these extraordinary gifts

In my ordinary life…

That I so greatly cherish

Custom Art With An Architectural Twist

Some of you know that I recently did a giveaway on my blog.  And, my friend, Gaylynn McBrayer, founder of La Montage – a “to the trade” studio in Lewisville – was the one who contributed the artwork for it.  It was by one of her amazing artists, Steve Taff.

IMG_5785

When I went by her place to pick it up for the winner I, of course, had to meander through the showroom again and look at all the new wonderful goodies she had.

IMG_5792

And, as usual, she did not disappointment.  There was incredible wall art by Steve as well as other fun “stuff” by some of her other artists….

IMG_5795

Like these incredible books.

IMG_5797

IMG_5799

Are these freaking awesome or what?

IMG_5815

Love ‘em!

IMG_5803

Every piece in there is unique and interesting….

IMG_5804

And incredibly creative.

IMG_5810

IMG_5817

IMG_5823

How about these cool frames to display your photos in?

IMG_5824

IMG_5834

Did I say…….unique?

IMG_5837

All of it – everything -  just amazing!

IMG_5805

And, well, truth be told – so is Gaylynn!

Classic Crown Molding and Baseboards

If you’re looking to update your crown molding and/or baseboards or maybe you are in the process of building a new home this is an area you may not want to put too much thought in – especially considering all the other decisions that have to be made.

But, it’s an important decorative element in the house and makes more of an impact than you may realize.

There are a great many styles for you to choose from….

Crown_Molding_Buildup

A great many depths….

crown-molding

IMG_0733_6a21d_Large

moldings_large_trad

Picture_073_84a9a_Large

A great many shapes…..

z11in

See what I mean?  Which style suits you?  Do your homework and think this design element through.  You’ll be glad you did.

And, the same thing goes with baseboards.

Siding(reduced)3

What shape do you want, how high do you want them?…..

Decisions, decisions, decision…..

But, these are important decisions none the less so don’t forget to give them serious thought.

Generally these days crown molding and baseboards have much more style than they did in the past.  They’re much deeper, more detailed and interesting than they once were.  Once upon a time you’d only see this sort of thing in much more expensive homes.  But, today that’s not necessarily the case.

It’s an architectural element that contributes a subtle style and flair that’s somewhat insidious, but makes a statement all the same.

Design is in the details – and it’s these kind of details that create a space with that designer finesse you’re looking for.

Life At Home: My Sweet Dad

For those of you who follow my blog you will have seen a couple of these pictures of me with my dad before.  But they’re pictures that I love so I wanted to post them again, one more time, in remembrance of him.

Sunday, the 9th, was the first anniversary of his death and the reminder that we’ve now spent an entire year without him.  My sister came down to be with my mom so we spent Saturday night and Sunday with her to reminisce and just help her (and each other) get through it.

my birthday with mom and dad

We had some sweet,  pleasant talks about him – reminisced about what a great dad and husband and grandfather he was.  And, how much we miss him!

IMG_0625

Time does make things easier – I admit that’s so true.  And that’s such a blessing.  But, there are times when the pain and grief just strike unexpectedly……like no other pain…..a deep pain that literally takes your breath away.  Which is what happened to me Sunday night and why I couldn’t post this till now.   (I know so many of you understand exactly how it feels.)

IMG_2410

And, when that kind of grief hits I stop and remind myself that he’s in heaven with the Lord now – free of pain and sorrow and fear.  I know he’s happy and at peace…and that gives me great comfort.

I love and miss you Dad……

so much!

Outdoor Furniture With A Modern Perk And A Little Bit Of Quirk

I know that folks up north are sort of moving toward a “fall” way of thinking……cooler weather, sweaters, etc.  But, for those of us in the south warm weather will be here for a while and we get to utilize our outdoor living areas for a few more months.  Sometimes even into December depending on the year.

Kmart-Outdoor-Furniture

And that means there’s still time for the addition of some new outdoor furniture to be enjoyed.  How relaxing does this chaise lounge area with the canopy top look?….I feel and yawn and a nap just looking at it.

good-designs-modern-outdoor-furniture-in-the-beach

The shape on these chairs and this table is fun and has a modern twist.  (And the view ain’t so bad either!)

hiroko_daybed

How’s this for a cozy, quirky sofa/bed?

outdoor-furniture

Or this?  Kind of looks likes something the Jetson’s might have had.  (In case your too young to know who that is – it’s a futuristic cartoon that used to be all the rage.  Google it!)

Outdoor-Furniture-Outlet

I love the unique style of these chairs and this table.  Fun!

outdoor-furniture-cushions4

As is this quirky seating.  Yes, again, the Jetson’s would have loved this.

Rattan-Sofa-Outdoor-Rattan-Furniture-YE-1963-

Mmmmmmm……nice!

Outdoor-Furniture-Sets

Great colors and a fun vibe.

wicker-outdoor-collection-by-merane

Amazing!  Wouldn’t this be fun in your own backyard?

This doesn’t look so comfy, but I thought it was interesting just the same!

Cool-Design-Outdoor-Furniture-Savannah-by-Cane-Line

Quirky, perky and dreamy……

all-weather-outdoor-furniture-concept

More modern perk than quirk, but I love these outdoor sectionals……

garden_furniture_patio_furniture

And, this clean modular look is always a great look.

So whether you’re in the north or the south, the east or the west…..if you like the outdoors….and who doesn’t….And if you like a bit of a modern perk or a little sass and quirk maybe some of these styles will work well in your own backyard for your family and friends to enjoy.
